In 2014, Afnan, Haifaa, Faiza and their families were forced to flee their home of Bashiqua just before IS took over the city. As Kurdish Yazidis, their religious group has suffered most of the destruction at the hands of ISIS and has given up on the idea of returning to a safe home. Many families have found asylum in Europe, like the three families in this story. The pictures show a new beginning into their lifes in western Germany.
With a lot of strength, the family proves day after day how they can overcome language barriers, cultural differences, German bureaucracy and the pain of missing their homeland. At the beginning of 2020, Afnan's daughter Zenan was the first family member to be born in Germany - her name means: the lucky one.
